Depuy ASR Implant Recalls

Johnson & Johnson's artificial joint company DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. has issued a GLOBAL RECALL of two of its metal-on-metal hip replacement systems:

  • ASR Hip Resurfacing System
  • ASR XL Acetabular System

The problem with the implant.
Its design is unfortunately shallower than other hip implant devices. The design makes the implant systems prone to problems.

Common Symptoms include the following:

  1. Constant hip pain
  2. Thigh and/or groin pain
  3. Pain while walking
  4. Weight-bearing pain
  5. Pain rising from a seated position

DePuy sold approximately 93,000 of these systems.
The true reasons are that these hip implants have a very high early failure rate in many patients which includes smaller people, typically women and patients who have weak bones.

These implants also can shed particles into the patient causing serious, painful reactions, causing an additional surgery.

Unfortunately, many patients have had to endure hip replacement surgeries within 12 to 24 months of the hip implants. The hip implants had failed after just a few years.

DePuy ASR Recall Information
All of our patients who have had their DePuy ASR hips recalled receive the following notice or a similar such notice from DePuy. One of our clients also received the additional notice from his orthopedic health care provider notifying him of the recall and how that orthopedic office is handling patients who have had a DePuy ASR.
